Did you know that CBD can assist in treating the symptoms of depression?
CBD’s mood enhancing benefits are believed to be related to its positive effect on serotonin receptors in the brain.
Serotonin is sometimes called the ‘happy chemical’, as it is understood to directly contribute to wellbeing and happiness. In turn, low serotonin levels are thought to be linked to depression.
While CBD doesn’t necessarily boost serotonin levels, researchers believe it affects how significantly the brain’s chemical receptors respond to the serotonin levels that are already in your system.
A 2014 animal study attested to this, finding that CBD’s effect on these receptors in the brain produced both antidepressant and anti-anxiety effects in test subjects.
CBD is also though to enhance levels of anandamide, known as the ‘bliss molecule’, which is an endocannabinoid naturally produced by the body.
While anandamide works to activate our CB1 receptors, our bodies release an enzyme called FAAH that breaks the compound down. CBD works to inhibit FAAH’s ability to perform this function - and the less anandamide is broken down, the stronger its mood enhancing properties are felt.
Another study in 2019 found CBD to have a fast and sustained antidepressant-like effect, without the undesirable side effects of insomnia, sexual dysfunction, weight gain, mood swings and more that traditional antidepressants can cause.
However, we do not advocate for replacing any antidepressant medication with CBD. Rather, it can be used in conjunction with existing medication to supplement its effects and potentially avoid further dependency down the line.
We also always advocate for consultation with your medical professional before adding CBD into the mix with existing medications.
