Flavonoids are a diverse group of phytonutrients (plant chemicals) found in almost all fruits and vegetables, and are largely responsible for their vivid colouring.
Like other phytonutrients, flavonoids are powerful antioxidants with anti-inflammatory and immune system benefits. And in recent years, they were also discovered to be present in cannabis.
On top of contributing to the pigmentation of the plant, these flavonoids were found to significantly contribute to its medicinal benefits too.
In 1985, flavonoids cannflavin A and cannflavin B were first identified, and verified to have anti-inflammatory benefits nearly 30 times more powerful than aspirin.
Flavonoids also help to strengthen the “entourage effect” - the interactive synergy between compounds found in cannabis that enhances their overall efficacy.
And as formalised studying of the plant becomes less restricted with every passing law, researchers are hoping to validate the vast potential that these important molecules hold for developing natural alternatives to opioids and other painkillers.
